Description:

HMS Gloucester, a Type 42 batch III destroyer was decommissioned on 30th June 2011. She appears in a less than ideal state, awaiting her fate.

She gave 32 years of distinguished service, including in the 1991 Gulf War, when she shot down an Iraqi Silkworm anti ship missile with a Seadart missile, which was heading for the American battleship USS Missouri. This was the first successful missile on missile engagement in the history of naval warfare which attracted much publicity & admiration from the USA.

Seen in Portsmouth naval base, next to the also decommissioned HMS Illustrious R06 on Aug 28th 2015.

Thanks for comments by davidships below, regarding HMS Gloucester, towed out of Portsmouth on 22nd Sept, to Turkish scrapyard.

Yes, a sad day, the last of the Type 42s now gone. The Rolls Royce Olympus & Tyne gas turbine engines are regularly replaced & serviced on ships. It powered the Type 42s, Type 21, 22 & 23 frigates, Invincible, Ark Royal & the last ship was the Illustrious. The remaining Olympus engines will be refurbished & sold at over a £ million each to the navies that use it, such as the French for the Georges Leygues class destroyers, Japanese, Malaysian, Brazilian, etc, & Dutch Kortenaer class destroyers.

What will happen to her Rolls Royce Olympus & Tyne gas turbine engines? Do you think they'll be transplanted to another vessel?
