As SS Norway she was removed from service after a boiler explosion in 2003, several attempts to save her came to nothing. QE2 is almost gone, but old lady Marco Polo is still in business

Far better looking than most liners today.

Thanks all, it was indeed a beautiful ship, rivalling the lines of some of the Italian ships.

One of my favourite liners ever built. Truly magnificent in both guises, especially those lovely streamlined funnels.

Thanks Clive for correct information abt. new top deck cabins. And rd77 for info abt her breaking up.

If Norway, ex France sailed until 2006, she would have sailed for 45 years, in different lines and cruises. During these years I think that millions of passengers must have got a lot of good memories of sailing this and at that time big ship.

We should also point out that when France was first converted into Norway she did not have those additional top-deck cabins. That structure was added in September 1990, ten years after the original conversion.

Trgve: she was beached at Alang in 2006, but work only began in 2007, due to various court cases.

A proud ship of that time. But when converted to "Norway" the number of cabins seems to have been increased by making one or two new decks on top of the ship. Not quite so elegant, but more economic. I saw her only as "Norway". Broken up at which year?

Yes indeed. One was designed for relatively short, year round, North Atlantic voyages whilst the other was designed for long-haul voyages from Northern Europe through tropical latitudes. Different liners, built at about the same time for totally different types of service.

Magnificent French shipdesign. And France was built one year after Oriana with this ship's messy design! Niels

I second that !!!

And I wish for this prominent photo to achieve TOP1 ... for the sake of the good ship FRANCE;

Magnificent. Truly one of the most beautiful liners built for the North Atlantic.
