I Think that the strops are stowed there James for lashing purposes !

Could be about weight saving but this is one of few ships I saw on here with such hatch covers. Looks like a pain to paint each of those frames if only on one cover. And no chance for any deck cargo, except maybe containers?

Looking at it again you're right Brian, it's clearer on full screen. I'm a bit perplexed by what appear to be strops stowed amongst the frames though.

Perhaps something to do with weight saving as well as easy access to inspect the condition of the frames, the underside being flush.

Surely, this one will never be allowed to sail "open top" even in the harbour! But why steel plates are missing on the upper side of the hatch covers?
