COMMENT THIS PHOTO(21)

I do live it with, and I prefer to enjoy my job instead of enduring an existence.
That's why I only work for companies which prefer to treat their employees like grown ups, avoid corporate brainwashing, display an appropriate degree of real loyalty to their employees and provide appropriate remuneration and time off. Unfortunately as time moves on they're becoming rarer and rarer.
It never ceases to amaze me just how many people are taken in hook, line and sinker by the corporate bull and propaganda which surrounds cruise ships, yet are totally oblivious to the somewhat less gilded reality.
Passenger ships were once a fantastic way to go sea, unfortunately that time has passed, never to return.

Malim Sahib, please don't get me wrong. When I said the seamen should look for a job onboard another ship we were discussing DESIGN, not the terms and conditions of work aboard a cruise ship.

And when it comes to the DESIGN of a cruise ship, interior and exterior, there's only one thing that counts: the paying passenger.

In the end it's him (or her) who'll decide wether this design will be successful or not.

@ what Captain Bob & rd77 said.

Jens,
You said that if staff didn't like on those ships they could go elsewhere, my point is that they frequently do. Cruise ships (of almost all companies) tend to have the poorest terms and conditions in the industry when compared to cargo ships, tankers and even passenger ferries.
You may think that the new hull graffiti enhances the ship, I (and many others) do not. I would normally say give it a few years and all will return to normal, but noting the longevity of the corporate vandalism inflicted on the Carnival business unit that was Holland-America, I have my doubts.

Aha, Carnival has a serious staff retention problem... because of the interior and exterior design of their ships I suppose, as that is what's being discussed here...

As for the contradiction in my post (which unfortunately I am unable to see)... the funnel color corresponds with the blue in the stylized flag and the "P&O Cruises" inscription on her hull (if my old eyes serve me right) which enhances her overall impression. In that context the old color simply didn't fit anymore...

Edit
comment

person
Alternatively, some people need to look beyond their cosy armchairs.

Edit
comment

person
Jens,
You've contradicted yourself in that post. If the funnel is so meaningless to paying passengers (as you suggest) then why bother repaint it?
As for those working onboard, well you might be interested to know that all of the Carnival "brands" (awful word) have a serious staff retention problem.

"The makeover has had a particularly negative reception from those professional seamen actually working onboard."
Unquote

Do those professional seaman working onboard pay to be able to work onboard? No. The passengers do. If they don't, then those professional seamen may look for a job onboard a ship that suits their taste of design a bit more.

Quote
"The dark blue funnel minimizes the effects of light and shadow which could otherwise highlight her unique funnel."
Unquote

Just how many people going on a cruise choose their ship by the uniqueness of its funnel? If you've got the answer, please let me know.

I hope they didn't redesign the flush of the WC, now that would be a discussion...

Edit
comment

person
A positive response from current and prospective bloods (cargo) who are probably impressed by the latest incarnation of the Beetle.
The makeover has had a particularly negative reception from those professional seamen actually working onboard. Not that they dare make anything but positive noises in public lest Carnival HQ find out. In the Carnival world, as with any large conglomerate, committing thought crime and not following the party line in public leads to dire consequences for the person concerned.

Edit
comment

person
Yes, the application of the Union Jack was poorly conceived. Her name is unreadable. The dark blue funnel minimizes the effects of light and shadow which could otherwise highlight her unique funnel. The little sunrise logo means---nothing. The new design scheme is---complete FAIL.

Edit
comment

person
The new livery has received a largely positive response on the P&O Facebook Forum.

Edit
comment

person
Nothing can distort a real beauty, but i'm a bit sorry to the disfigured funnel.

Edit
comment

person
It isn't that the livery was designed by someone who appears to have no heart for ships, it seems to have been put together by someone who has no idea of design or how and where to apply it.

Edit
comment

person
It looks like something that came off a charter airliner. Also, you can't see AURORA's special funnel shape anymore. And the thing with the name on the bow is just bloody stupid. Clearly this livery was conjured up by someone who has no heart for ships.

Edit
comment

person
A germanic tinge to the 'rule britannia' I don't know if there will be a thousand year reign, however! mrdot.

Edit
comment

person
Stefan, I didn't notice any unwillingness of the world's tourists to travel on British Airways, especially Concorde with its bit of wavy Union Flag.

Edit
comment

person
Maybe it will grow on me in time but right now I hate it. The funnel has no distinction whatsoever and overall the livery has a 'low cost' look to it....yuck!

Edit
comment

person
I don't understand why they changed the funnel colour, unless it was change for the sake of it.
The Union flag logo just looks tacky and tasteless - in the shades of the NCL/US version of "patriotism".

Edit
comment

person
Amazing livery for every UK resident, but I don't think anyone else would love this. Quiet odd, in my opinion.

Edit
comment

person
And I also think the last funnel looked much better than this one

Edit
comment

person
Almost impossible to read the name on the bow - surely in contravention of class/flag state regs?
