This most interesting photograph was taken in 1981 or January 1982 when the ship was owned by Prinaritis Shipping (A.Lelakis). She had suffered engine trouble after sailing from New Orleans on 6th January 1982 for St.John (NB), arriving at New York on 13th January and then broken up locally.

This is a really good photo looking from the tarboard quarter and shows an awful lot more than the standard bow on photos. I see the crew either repairing the flood lights and nav lights on the main mast-- I doubt they are painting-- judging from the generally aged condition here!! Very useful for model making.

Ugly? I suppose they were nothing particularly special especially as they were rarely well maintained, and generally rust streaked overside with weeping mainly coming off the edging of the sheer strake and from scuppers whilst with HH. Several of the vessels had the stern bulwark. The Baron Minto was, I think, of that style but the Baron Maclay and the Baron Wemyss had rails. Probably also the Baron Kinnaird. They were all registered at Ardrossan, flew the Scottish Ensign(with permission)on the Foremast and the House flag on the mainmast. It was the apprentices job to raise those flags neatly and carefully so the rose well clear of the trucks. I was an apprentice on Maclay Minto and Wemyss in that order. They did in fact look like their predecessors motor vessels and steamers- no design upgrades (other than funnels.) I thought they looked better than chatty Chapmans of the same approx era!It was standard practice to paint all around and over anything before arrival in the UK to give owner a good impression. A week later the rust would break out all over. Didnt do much for morale!!!

OK, so Adrossan it is. Apart from that I can't help finding it one of the more ugly general cargo ships around, certainly as she was built in 1960. She looks more like late forties/early fifties.

I have a sequence of this photo and I can confirm the original port of registry is ARDROSSAN.

Hungry Hogarth's ships were registered Ardrossan. (I have never come across any ships registred Saltcoats)

That would make sense, her original hailing port was Ardrossan.

It looks to me like it ends in AN. The illusion of L is created by the plating join and shadow.

@Pieter
If the name of the port on both sides of the middle it could be Saltcoats (Ardrossan)
When highlightning the image I can see an S under the greek Σ and a T further right.

But that leaves the question that Kyle raised: What was the port name ending AL?

Baron Belhaven built 1960 by same shipyard and probable sister became Global Trader in 1967

TPEINTEP means TRADER in Greek language !
Now we go for the first name on the stern...
Success and best regards,

I can't seem to find a closer match with any of the other Baron's either. The biggest thing that's bugging me is where the unpainted "AL" visible after Piraeus came from. I can't seem to find even a close match for either the former names or ports of registry. Like I said, a real jumble of letters
Kind Regards,
Kyle

I'm not 100% convinced, but the design is very similar to that of the Greek-flagged GLOBAL MARINER, IMO 5037149, built as BARON JEDBURGH in 1958. The only issue is that vessel had a bulwark around the stern, and the name is only slightly consistent within the jumble of letters. Unfortunately, I can't find any images of the vessel under that name to see if the bulkwak had been removed. She was scrapped at Massawa, Eritrea after grounding on December 30th, 1979.

Kind Regards,
Kyle
