@ Bob,, I know that,,working in a company which did the same. But they invested then in new LNG/LPG tankers which they own and new bulkers with 10 year charters and also cement carriers,,, but Maersk seems to have uased the money for the container expansion. Looks to me somehow (as also mentioned in the magazine SEATRADE) that they sold the family silver and having now less assets to overcome the problems. Containerships not really appreciating in value, to the contrary

Sale and charter-back has long been a ploy of the accountants who run the shipping industry, to balance the books and/or make the bottom line look better.

Hi Lappino,, Maersk sold the tanker fleet a while back to finance part of the container expansion ,,they still own it via some corners or those tankers are builded by the new owners and just going into the Maersk charter ?
