I think the reason why it's so special is because it relates to "boys-toys" although I don't want to come across as sexist.

The weapon is a 7.62 x 51mm L7A2 General Purpose Machine Gun or GPMG

Sorry not in to guns but if you look at the photo it tells you it was taken on board HMS Somerset on her visit to Lerwick last weekend.
Also not sure why so many hit on this photo as it looks nothing special to me as have never put a photo on arnaments before.

O yes on guard on deck with weapons at the ready at all times.
