Thanks for the extra info on Gdynia. I read the report from the investigation but that was a long time ago.

Not the first time an ice-strehgthen bow has claimed a victim, the most famous is possibly M/S Stockholm gutting S/S Andrea Doria altough Doria's stability problems and possibly an open door compromising her watertight integrity might have factored in.

Hi Gena,, you were present when that happened. The picture must have been taken from an elevated position,, like a bridge wing or a airplane to look that way over the Coast Guard vessel

Not strictly a container ship, but small general cargo vessel of 3,930gt, Cyprus-flagged and managed by Euro-Africa Shipping Lines. The fact that the Gdynia was ice-strengthened and strengthened for heavy cargoes might explain why she got away with minimal damage whist the bulker, laden with fertilizer on a voyage from Ventspils to China, sank.

Sorry you are a couple of years off. This is Fu Shan Hai a chinese bulk carrier which was rammed by the polish container vessel Gdynia on the 31st of May 2003. This occurred between Bornholm and the swedish coast, and Fu SHan Hai sank later in the evening.

The inquiry put the blame squarely on Gdynia for failing to adhere to the colregs.
