Description:

Technically PCU (Pre Commissioning Unit) not USS yet. Moored at Norfolk Naval Station preparing for her scheduled commissioning in mid October in Baltimore MD. IMHO due to her size (over 14,000 tons), armament (6.1" guns), and the fact she is commanded by a Captain instead of a Commander, she should be classified as a Cruiser. Just my two cents worth. Taken from the tour boat Miss Hampton II on a windy and overcast day.

Especially considering the battle between the CSS Virginia and USS Monitor was had on what could be consider as the same waterway as this picture was taken. In fact, they can see the site from her.

Strangely reminiscent of Confederate ironclad ram CSS VIRGINIA.

Destroyers mostly have Commanders or Lieutenant Commanders as their commanding officers, however the CO of a destroyer group was usually always a Captain (aka Captain D).

I didn't know that about Captains, thought destroyers were strictly Commanders as CO.

Both Spruance class destroyers I served on had captains as the CO though one of the three was promoted while on-board. I'd also think a Captain would command any lead ship of a destroyer class. I recall the USS Arleigh Burke (DDG51) also had a Captain as commissioning CO.

He is, he is James A Kirk, opposed to James T Kirk. William Shatner (the actor who played James T Kirk), has written a letter of support to the crew of the USS Zumwalt.

Nice catch.

To ad to her Sci-Fi looks, I read somewhere that her commanding Officer is called Captain James Kirk.
