Thanks for your comments guys! It was indeed something out of the ordinary - to find a port, and ships of this size in a place like that so far from any other waterways! Unfortunately the vessels and the harbour itself (including an actual oil tanker terminal) are in quite poor state, as they have been unused since the 1980's. One vessel remains in operation, a Soviet-built icebreaking tug (built 1983) which now serves as a daytrip tourboat on the lake (and yes, of course I went for a cruise!).

Fantastic to see these images from Mongolia

Wow - has anyone ever been here before foggy? Are they bunkering tankers? Are they ex-military? Are they being used by the indigenous folk?
