Passenger ferry “Heisei Iroha Maru" (平成いろは) arriving at Tomonoura Port, Fukuyama, Japan, on 18th August 2017
Owner: Fukuyama City
Gross tons: 19
Length: 22 m
Passenger capacity: 8 seated & 62 standing
Completed January 2010
Operating area: Tomonoura to nearby small island of Sensuijima (approx. 5 minutes each way). The unusual raised bow structure is to accommodate the steep-stepped landing point at Tomonoura (raised up) and low-lying jetty on Sensuijima (lowered down)
The boat is loosely-modelled on the larger (30 m) “Iroha Maru”, built in England in 1862, which sank following a collision off Tomonoura in 1867 while under the command of Sakamoto Ryoma, a leading participant in the overthrow of the Tokugawa Shogunate that was ongoing at the time. The “Heisei” part of the present ship's name is to indicate it was built during the Heisei Era (reign of of the present Emperor)
