The Soviet Union's KOMMUNISTICHESKOYE ZNAMYA was on voyage from Belawan to Odessa; she passed Istanbul northbound on 3rd February 1987.
Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, she flew the flag of Ukraine.

No details in this photo can confirm this, but the flag on the mast No. 1 definitely has three colors - from the top: red, white and black. These are the colors of the flag of Egypt. This suggests that the ship may be transiting the Suez Canal. The flag on the signal mast is red, but this may indicate that the ship is carrying hazardous materials and, in accordance with the regulations, the code flag "B" (BRAVO) was hoisted.

If I remember correctly we came out of the South end of the canal during the 3rd/4th week in January so there is a good chance we passed her on her way North to enter the canal.

The ship was built by the Gdańsk Shipyard. Lenin in 1968.
The ship's hull was originally built as hull no. 15 of the Murom B-44 type bulk carrier design with construction number B44/15. (The operational parameters (size, speed and type of reloading equipment) of the B-44 type ships corresponded to the Krasnograd type ships built in Finland). The hull was then rebuilt for the new B-40 design and the construction number was changed to B40/02. (The first ship of the B40 series was called Kommunist).
Under its original name (translated as COMMUNIST BANNER), the ship sailed until the collapse of the Soviet Union (1992). Later the name was changed to SIRIUS.
Home port is ODESSA.
Flag: until 1992 Soviet Union, later Ukraine.
Home port: Odessa
GRT: 9933
Deadweight: 12707 t
LOA: 154 m
Breadth: 20 m
01/06/1996 arrived at the Alang roadstead, 05/06/1996 – beached.
Unfortunately, I couldn't find any information about the main engine, but I think it was it
One of the license B&W engines produced by the Gdańsk Shipyard, possibly a license SULZER from H.Cegielski Poznań

According to data from Polish Register of Shipping, B-44 and B-40 ships had Cegielski - Sulzer 6RD76,
rated for 9600 hp (for some B-44 ships, 9000hp is also given).
A beautiful photo.
