Description:
Norfolk Naval Shipyard's huge hammerhead crane was built in 1940 to lift battleship main gun turrets for mainteance during World War II. It could lift up to 350 tons and is some 20 stories in height. It looms over the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River and is a Portsmouth VA longstanding landmark.
A US Navy floating crane is moored next to it and PREVAIL provides an idea of how big this mammoth crane really is.
