Description:
Scan of an old B&W photo of the Mass. Maritime training ship "Bay State" taken July 1970 at her berth just off the Cape Cod Canal in Buzzards Bay Massachusetts. She served as the academy's training ship from 1959 to 1974. Prior to that she served in the Pacific theater during WWII as the attack transport USS Doyen (APA-1).
Launched in 1942 by Consolodated Steel of Calif., she was commisioned 22 May 1943 and named after Brigadier Charles A. Doyen, a World War I artillery commander.
She had a distinguished career during the war participating in the invaisions of Kiska, Tarawa, Kwajalein, Saipan and Guam, Leyte, Lingayen Gulf, and Iwo Jima earning a total of six battle stars.
Displacement: 4,351 tons (lt)

As a cadet I made three sea cruises on her betwen 1970 and 1973. Although she had twin screws she had only a single rudder and handled poorly. She was also a poor sea boat and rolled even in the smallest of seas.
