She was really a trouble ship: On 19th of July 1962 breakdown of the starboard engine due to a fault in the high pressure turbine, which had to be disconnected. Four days later the port engine suffered an identical problem. Repairs at Melbourne and Sydney. Four days after leaving Suva and Papeete both engines had to be stopped again and the high pressur turbines disconnected. Via Panama canal back to Southampton repairs again. Second journey started on 18th of October 1962. Engine problems were the continually plague of this ship. 12th of June 1971 a boiler explosion happened. By now the engine and boiler problems had become very serious. The last returning to Southampton was on 1st of November 1975. Sold to shipbreakers in Taiwan NORTHERN STAR left Southampton for the last time on 7th November 1975, arriving in Kaohsiung on 11th December 1975 and the final demolition began. NORTHERN STAR, built by Vickers-Armstrong Ltd., Newcastle, had a gross tonnage of 24.733, a speed of 20 knots with a propulsion of geared turbines on twin screws. She had accommodation for 1.412 pax and carried no cargo. (Source: Australian Migrant Ships 1946-1977 by Peter Plowman) Regards Peter
