Presumably they were worthwhile to have them operating as school ships instead of being sold or laid up, in case of an emergency they could readily be reconverted to troopships once again.

The vessel had been laid up in the river Fal from April 1985. She was sold to Taiwanese breakers and was renamed "Triton" in May 1986. The accident happened when the vessel was anchored off Kaohsiung on 22 August 1988. A typhoon drove her ashore, where she was wrecked. She was later broken up, but the site does not say when.
