That was normal practice to rename ships with states names or named after some statesmen before scrapping, ROSSIYA(ex PATRIA), for example, was also renamed to ANIVA, etc.

Yes. Ship was renamed TOBOLSK. The "Soviet Union" could not subject to scrapping.

What a great picture of this rarely seen ship! What is the location? Somewhere in Siberia?
Are you sure she was renamed TOBOLSK? I have never seen that before. Most sources indicate that the SOVETSKIY SOYUZ was not renamed and scrapped in Siberia in Q1 1982...
