Ship is in the Thames, off Stone Ness and heading downriver into St Clement's Reach. In the background are (centre) Reed's Empire Paper Mill and (right) the masts of the training ship WORCESTER and 'Everard's Bay', headquarters of the well-known coaster owners. All are no more.

This was the collier identification numbers for recognition by Tilbury Signal Station who would report the colliers' arrival or departure and also pass orders to the ship as to which power station or gas works to head for.
