Sounds like a nice very nice holiday to me, then!:-) Hope we have a sunny July...

In my previous visits, shipspotting was done in "stolen" time while supposedly working in Hamburg (visiting shipowners, shipyards and attending shipping exhibitions and conferences at Hamburg Messe). This visit will be devoted 100% to shipspotting by day and dinking Holsten and eating currywurst at night.

Now, Bob, 1987, that's a quarter of a century, then it's really time you visit Hamburg again. Will this be a visit for shipspotting purposes? Let me know and if you want to maybe we can meet for some shipspotting at Bubendey Ufer...

Cornelia, guess it's my age. In the past I didn't mind the cold, but meanwhile I prefer the warmth. Or as Theo would simply put it... AGE!!!!:-))

Hey Bob
a visit im "Alten Land" is always worthwile, I made my Masters License at Gruenendeich, in the middle of it, I loved that area and had a appartment for another 3 years
after I finished nautical school there. Those private bed and breakfast were in those times fantastic to stay !!!

Jens: My last visit to HH was in September 1987. I am planning a comeback in July this year but, since I no longer have my company expense account, I shall not be staying at the Atlantic Hotel this time. A cheap little Zimmer somewhere in the Altes Land would suit.

I agree with Cornelia, but I'm well satisfied with +25C.

I think, something is strange: Many people afraid of frozen fingers, but what I am most afraid of are temperatures over 30°C, I definitely try to avoid that :-) Because, against cold you can always wear more. Against heat, you can just let the sweat run ! I am looking forward moving to North Germany, summers are not as hot there than here in Basel

I think you're right, Bob, I'm sure they didn't offer Currywurst when I went there (a pity, actually), but prices were moderate by current standards.
By the way, when have you last been to Hamburg? Isn't it time for another visit?:-)

OK..then no Irma anymore,, but still a nice place one can tell

Irma's Imbiss was a bit more 'al fresco' than the one in your link, Jens: and I should imagine somewhat cheaper, too!

Theo, I've changed my mind again. I'll be the master of a bulker sailing the Caribbean in my next life. Whatever regulations there might be (you know what we discussed lately)... I'M FED UP WITH FROZEN FINGERS!:-))

I think that Irma might be gone, Bob, and that this one took her place:

I've been there a few times, nice to sit in the sun while having a beautiful view up and down the Elbe...

yes,,Irma is a name there !!!,,
I took 75-78 during the aprenticeship always aferry from Finkenwerder via bubendey to Landungsbruecken,,, and back
4x a week. Sometimes we also crossed over to teufelsbrueck and such,,, we had a monthly ticket,,could ride as we wanted in the whole HH port area.

In the 1980s after visiting Bubeney Ufer, I regularly dined (Bier und Currywust) at Irma's Imbiss on Teufelsbrueck pier.

Hi Theo, thanks for your nice comment! Off-duty at the moment?:-)
Yes, there's a restaurant about 1 km down the road from Bubendey Ufer, but I must admit I haven't any idea about its opening hours. Furthermore you can't see from the restaurant what's going on on the Elbe, so I prefer freezing (Sometimes I jump on a ferry to make a short trip to Neumühlen and back to Bubendey in order to get some warmth... remember the Bockwürste!!!:-))

Hi Bob, thank you very much for your kind comment, it's much appreciated! Well, Bubendey Ufer still is no tourist attraction, but you can get there quite comfortably nowadays by car (for me a ride of about 30 min) and even by ferry. The ferry makes a stop there about every 15 minutes on its way from Finkenwerder to Landungsbrücken. I like the place very much, to me one of the best places for inbound vessels, the angle is great. Unfortunately there still isn't any shelter from the weather. Although it's been sunny here all day the wind quickly got me freezing, but your comment shows that it was worth it!

Jens great shot,,,
Bubendey is directly beside the HH pilot station,,if am not mistaken there is also a restaurant not too far away
so,,sure can get a good german "grog or Icebreaker"

As I remember it, the landing stage at Bubendey Ufer was a god-forsaken, middle-of-nowhere place on a nice day. You are a most dedicated shipspotter to go there in weather like this. However, you got a super photo of Doehle's open-top Sietas Typ 186b. Worth freezing for?
