Thanks you all for you good comments....and about the smoke, i think Canada had to have such a very large number of those kind of Icebreakers so such a puff of smoke like that really make change in the planet climat!

Alco enginers are famous for smoke after idling for a period of time. There is a anme for the phenomena, but it involves unfired fuel pooling or dwelling in the injectors. Lots of US tugs with Alco engines were famous smokers! Des bons fumeures

The three River Class Ice Breakers in the Canadian Coast Guard fleet, Des Groseilliers, Pierre Radisson and Aminson (ex. Sir John Franklin),were all built between 1978 and 1982 long before global warming was the topic of discussion around the dinner table. The main propulsion chosen, for each of these vessels was six Alco engines to drive two electric propulsion motors turning two shafts. For those of you who don't know, Alco engines were designed to power trains, so what we have in each of these vessels is six train engines providing a total of 13600 SHP ( 10145 Kw). The next time you see a train speed up, watch the exhaust, and be thankful the're not driven by the older Fairbanks/Morse opposed piston engines that came before the Alco and were installed in the older icebreakers. By the way, as a retired Canadian Coast Guard employee I've seen these ships save many vessels from being crushed by rafting ice and the crews on those ships never complained about the exhaust.

Best Regards,
Wayne Connolly

There was a change of crew in Quebec Harbour yesterday as they were going to Magdalene Islands.
They are testing the engines?
Lots of carbon they didn't work much this past winter.
I believe soon The Harper Governement is bound to privatise icebreaking and escort services on the St-Lawrwnce. It smells like that

Hello Mr. Dot.......Probably only a brief puff of black smoke as an engine was started. Nothing to get all environmentally concerned or hot-under-the-collar about!....as Bob Scott already write to me......Beleive it or not??????
