Description:

Inbound to Fremantle WA before sunrise, 12/4/1979
Built 1972 by VEB Mathias Thesen Werft Wismar for the USSR and operated by the Baltic Shipping Co. 19872grt. Sister ships were ALEKSANDR PUSHKIN, IVAN FRANKO, SHOTA RUSTAVELI & TARAS SHEVCHENKO. MIKHAIL LERMONTOV had a major refit in 1984 during which the hull was repainted white with a blue line. On 16/2/1986, during the ship's second cruising season in Australasia after the refit, MIKHAIL LERMONTOV struck rocks and sank off Cape Jackson at the entrance to Marlborough Sound, New Zealand.
