Many warships are classed these days, and therefore carry a class identity number. The IMO Number is the Lloyd's Register ID Number (IMO numbers were originally derived from the LR system)

Thanks Ken,
Just wondered if it was because pre-commissioning she was (in this case) flying the red ensign and thus warranted the IMO number.

This is a question I dealt with a while ago, I was reliably informed that many warships are issued with an IMO number but rarely use it, upon being commissioned the Pennant Number is the preferred means for identification.
