Description:
SOPHIA, built at Hamburg in 1929, was memorably photographed passing Gravesend, inbound for Tilbury Dock to load for Cuba, on 20th August 1969.
SOPHIA had been built for Wilh. Wilhemsen as TAI PING YANG for operation on their joint "round the world" service with Barber Steamship Lines Inc. of New York.
Purchased by Greek owners in 1962 and managed by Franco Shipping, SOPHIA was broken up at Fener, Turkey, commencing 16th March 1972.
