Description:

Built 1925 for Norddeutscher Lloyd, Bremen.Sept.1925 maiden voyage Bremerhaven-New York.Between 1934 and 1938 several times on charter to KdF-Organisation.From October 1938 until May 1939 laid up at Bremerhaven.May/June 1939 two short cruises for KdF.In July 1939 requisitioned by the German Navy she sailed on July 15 from Bremerhaven to Swinemünde.Two days later she had a heavy boiler explosion with th loss of 17 men. After repairs at Blohm&Voss used as hospital ship. 1944 accomodation ship at Gotenhafen (Gdynia), end of 44 til January 45 engaged in the evacuation of refugees from the German eastern provinces.

P.s. And you posted it in the right time: August 31st is the commemoration date of her tragic sinking claiming 423 lives as a result of a collision near Novorossiysk in 1986
