Description:

Owned photograph by my father Captain Orfeo Ticac; within my collection since 1963

PARTIZANKA the first and only Yugoslav trans-ocean passenger ship.
She made 4 voyages from Rijeka to South America and 2 voyages from Rijeka to Australia.
Also known as the *Emigrant Ship*.

Built 1927 at shipyard Newport News, USA under name SHWANE
Length : 120 meters
Breath : 18,90 meters
Steamship

Owner since 2nd July 1947 : JUGOLINIJA, Rijeka, Croatia (then YU)
The ship was bought by Jugolinija in Portugal as CITY OF LISABON.
Passengers : 750
Crew members : 195
Political commissars : 15
At Split on 12th October 1949 caught-up severe fire on several locations onboard and suffered serious damage.
Scrapped beginning of 1950's.

On the photograph can be clearly seen the Jugolinija's funnel markings: two light blue bands with the red star in the white band.
My father was for a shorter time a Deck Officer onboard this ship.

My nonno (grandfather) was a passenger on this ship, in 1948. He came to Argentina from Italy (but I don't know if he went aboard the ship in Italy).

Partizan = Partisan-boy, Partisan-man
Partizanka = Partisan-girl, Partisan-woman

Yes,, they were Tito's partisans during WW2.
Glad to have been able to assist you Emmanuel & clarify,
Kind regards /Jadran

Hi Jadran ,what does the name PARTIZANKA means? Has it got to do with the famous Yugoslav partisans commanded by Tito during WW2. ?

Jadran, there is a wrong date in 'Susacka revija'. In his story Neven Jerkovic quoted official date: August 12th. Brgds

I see that in 1947 and 1949 she called at Malta,I was only 2 and 3 years respectively at that time so the only ships I knew of were the toy boats in our zinc baths. If your father was on the ship at that time he must have some recollections of Malta, battered Malta as it was only a coupke of years since the end of the war and emigration was the order of the day at those times.

Thank you very much riohondo !
Another link here (on Croatian language):
http://www.klub-susacana.hr/revija/clanak.asp?Num=60&C=4
Says:
"U noći 12. listopada 1949. g. brodska straža obavila je ophodnju po brodu. Bila je tiha i prohladna noć. Odjednom je straža ugledala na udaljenom mjestu broda neku svjetlost, potrčali su i vidjeli požar u brodu".
In the night of 12th October 1949 the ship's watch-out ............. noticed some blaze on the distant part of the ship, they ran there and saw fire on the ship.
Kind regards /Jadran

Hi Emmanuel,, she had such a big number of political commissars onboard because she always carried several hundred emigrants onboard her in both directions (funny to read *in both directions* but it's true).
I slightly know some more details on this issue of your query, but it's very difficult to explain in a short wording,, so I prefer to stop here.
Best regards /Jadran

PARTIZANKA (not PATRIZANKA) was gutted by fire on August 12, 1949 (not in October). She was reduced to non-propelled barge MA-101 and finally scrapped in 1954. Full and correct story is here in Croatian: http://www.dubrovnik-turistinfo.com/index.php?dubrovnikturist=vijesti&idKat=5&id=254

Re my earlier comment I meant "why were the number of...." not "why where the number......" which the letter H gave the question a different meaning. I presume that they where embarked in cabins...he..he....Regards .

I think this is your best photo to date Jadran, hope you got others just as this remarkable one.Incidentally why where the great number of political commissars 15 embarked on this ship? I know these were different times ,was it because she was a passenger ship transporting Yugoslav passengers?

The best one I've seen of her, thank you for posting. Jadran pardon my impertinence (your qute: " PARTIZANKA the first and only Yugoslav trans-ocean passenger ship. ") there were at least three more RADNIK ex LURLINE (Democratic Federal Yugoslavia)http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=237786
PRINCEZA OLGA ex EBRO http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=474339 , KRALJICA MARIJA ex ARAGUAYA (Kingdom of Yugoslavia)http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=237955. Marvelous pic and quite scarce depiction of her on Australia run. Cheers
