I am with you 100%. We has this argumaent some years after a member had been to a laecture and was taken in by athe old PR-puff spouted by Cunard and the ship's designer. QM2 is indeed strenghtened at the sharp end so as to maintain speed in a rough North Atlantic. But these crossings are simply trans Atlantic cruises, masquerading as and harping back nostalgically to old-fashioned liner services.

In my mind QM2 is a cruise ship as that is her purpose in life, nothing more.
Floating resort may be a more accurate description all told, as with a cruise ship the vessel itself is the destination and is therefore most important in the eyes of passenger (oops, I mean guests).
On the old liner runs the vessel itself was a means to an end, simply a method of transportation as an aircraft is today and by the same token which company you travelled with was decided in the same manner you would choose an airline today.

Vessels engaged in a liner trade are historically referred to as liners, ergo you have passenger liners, cargo liners and pass/cargo liners like the St Helena. Certain ships engaged in liner trades today do indeed fit that description, e.g. container ships.
The hype surrounding the term 'liner' which exists in the minds of the general public is entirely media induced, concocted by shipping lines around the turn of the century and does not reflect the reality.
QM2 is merely a cruise ship (there is no such thing as a cruise liner except in the minds of the ignorant) based around a North Atlantic hull.
Once Canberra changed roles to being cruise passenger orientated in the early seventies her Master famously stated that his vessel 'had stopped being a liner and was now a cruise ship'. By your definition regarding design he would be wrong.

I was fortunate to be able to take advantage of this unique opportunity

Of course design is the most important consideration, rather than the trade. QM2 has already made over 200 liner crossings of the Atlantic. Regarding the St. Helena she is more a passenger carrying cargo ship than a liner, making her money from ferrying supplies rather than people. By your argument some of todays box-boats carrying 12 passengers might also be called liners !

I rather suspect I have a much greater idea than you have. Design does not make a liner, however the trade of a vessel does. Carnival/Cunard do not make a serious attempt to maintain a North Atlantic liner service, there are maybe dozen or two gimmick crossings for the benefit of the tourists onboard but nothing which could constitute a serious liner service. Ask yourself why did Carnival commit to the extra expense of this ship if they do no intend to use it accordingly? It's a massively expensive PR exercise - pure and simple.
The only vessel that can truthfully be called a liner that is in active service under the British flag is RMS St Helena.

If the entity known today as Cunard were to actively provide an Atlantic liner service then she would be a liner, a few token crossings per year don't make it so.

And James, they are not sisters, QE and QV are cruise ships, QM2 is an ocean liner, NOT a cruise ship.
