The only thing that is ending is the QM2's world CRUISE. Mr Onions can call it whatever he likes but Equasis calls it a Passenger (Cruise) Ship so, as far as this site is concerned, THAT should be the end of it

I didn't realise the blog of a US merchantman was the definite word on such things, in my naivety I always presumed such things to merely be opinion.

James C:
I am with you 100%. We has this argumaent some years after a member had been to a laecture and was taken in by athe old PR-puff spouted by Cunard and the ship's designer. QM2 is indeed strenghtened at the sharp end so as to maintain speed in a rough North Atlantic. But these crossings are simply trans Atlantic cruises, masquerading as and harping back nostalgically to old-fashioned liner services.

Edit
comment

person
The only thing I have a problem with is people out there religiously believing the hype and nonsense peddled by PR conscious cruise companies.
In my mind QM2 is a cruise ship as that is her purpose in life, nothing more.
Floating resort may be a more accurate description all told, as with a cruise ship the vessel itself is the destination and is therefore most important in the eyes of passenger (oops, I mean guests).
On the old liner runs the vessel itself was a means to an end, simply a method of transportation as an aircraft is today and by the same token which company you travelled with was decided in the same manner you would choose an airline today.

Edit
comment

person
Essentially yes ! Canberra was designed and built as a liner and a fine example she was too. However, although popular with her cruising cliental, she was neither particularly suited to being, nor successful as, a cruise ship as her draft was too great for many ports on the typical 'cruise' ship itineraries. You clearly have something against liners, so perhaps you would be happier if QM2 would be reclassed as a passenger ferry. And perhaps cruise ships should be called floating resorts, which is considerably more polite than some of the descriptions that have appeared on SS.

Edit
comment

person
A passenger liner in the traditional sense IS simply a posh name for a ferry. No matter how much you like to think otherwise, all the Cunard/White Star/CGT/US Lines ships on the North Atlantic run were effectively passenger ferries - running a liner trade - something that was their sole purpose.
Vessels engaged in a liner trade are historically referred to as liners, ergo you have passenger liners, cargo liners and pass/cargo liners like the St Helena. Certain ships engaged in liner trades today do indeed fit that description, e.g. container ships.
The hype surrounding the term 'liner' which exists in the minds of the general public is entirely media induced, concocted by shipping lines around the turn of the century and does not reflect the reality.
QM2 is merely a cruise ship (there is no such thing as a cruise liner except in the minds of the ignorant) based around a North Atlantic hull.
Once Canberra changed roles to being cruise passenger orientated in the early seventies her Master famously stated that his vessel 'had stopped being a liner and was now a cruise ship'. By your definition regarding design he would be wrong.

Of course design is the most important consideration, rather than the trade. QM2 has already made over 200 liner crossings of the Atlantic. Regarding the St. Helena she is more a passenger carrying cargo ship than a liner, making her money from ferrying supplies rather than people. By your argument some of todays box-boats carrying 12 passengers might also be called liners !

Perfect scene!!!

Edit
comment

person
I agree with the good Doctor regarding the build of the ships. I traveled on QM2's final WB trip of December, 2012 and we hit a storm so fierce even the experienced crew members were awed by the ferocity. QM2 slowed to 15 knots and finally was able to get back to speed. The floating shoebox cruise ships of today never would have handled that storm.

Edit
comment

person
Allan,
I rather suspect I have a much greater idea than you have. Design does not make a liner, however the trade of a vessel does. Carnival/Cunard do not make a serious attempt to maintain a North Atlantic liner service, there are maybe dozen or two gimmick crossings for the benefit of the tourists onboard but nothing which could constitute a serious liner service. Ask yourself why did Carnival commit to the extra expense of this ship if they do no intend to use it accordingly? It's a massively expensive PR exercise - pure and simple.
The only vessel that can truthfully be called a liner that is in active service under the British flag is RMS St Helena.

Hi Pedro. Nice shot. Real opportunity picture. What a sight. For the spotters in Southampton a superb and unique opportunity for a couple of lifetime night shots, so be ready with patience and a good and stable support...jejeje Congratulations again Pedro.

Edit
comment

person
James_C - you clearly have no idea regarding the design and build quality of a liner compared to a cruise ship. Having been to lectures by Stephen Payne, the designer of the vessel, it is very clear there are many differences in both design and build quality of a vessel that is built to plough through winter Atlantic storms at 28kts rather than one that is designed to pootle around the Caribbean or Med at 15kts.

Allan

Edit
comment

person
An 'ocean liner' only in name, despite her design quirks the whole project is by and large PR bluster to give that ship a unique identity for marketing purposes.
If the entity known today as Cunard were to actively provide an Atlantic liner service then she would be a liner, a few token crossings per year don't make it so.

Edit
comment

person
Great shot.....all three in Southampton tomorrow 9th.....unfortunately arriving around 5 in the morning and sailing 10 at night. So no great photo op. Big 10th birthday celebration for QM2 but proposed release of 10,000 balloons cancelled after pressure from green groups. But the fireworks are still on !! unless the local seagulls begin to complain.

And James, they are not sisters, QE and QV are cruise ships, QM2 is an ocean liner, NOT a cruise ship.

Not sisters in the true sense of the word as they're not all of similar design. I suppose the correct term would be fleetmates, but then again 3 ships hardly constitutes a fleet.
