My name is Peter Davies
I was the galley boy on the Baskerville when this wonderful picture was taken. I can only assume it was the helicopter from the icebreaker called the Labrador which was in the vicinity at the time took the picture
Thanks again for bringing back such fond memories.

Hello Rene, A really great image and of special interest to me as I was 2nd Mate on the Baskerville for several voyages to eastern Canada, 1965 to 1967. I vividly remember the ice navigation, being sure to come astern before the ship stopped to avoid getting stuck, backing up for a couple of hundred metres then full ahead! Even more of a challenge at night with searchlights on each bridgewing, looking for the leads and avoiding the pressure ridges.

Not particularly thick, maybe a foot at the most, but enough to stop her.
I could be wrong, but it looks like she might be stuck with main engine turning over so as to ensure no ice build up around the rudder or prop.

Very nice picture, the steam(I suppose) cargo ship in that icy (and sunny)conditions. It seems that she has to make her own way through the ice, no ice-breaker helping her. Anyone guessing/presuming how thick the ice is??

Must be hard going through the closed ice channel having an ordinary bow & so much of steaming! Fantastic shot indeed!
