I once heard the first Captain on "The World", a Norwegian, said jokingly on the TV that if he ever meet the US president onboard, the President could say: "I'm the President of the United States"...the captain could say: "Yes, and I am Master of the World" :-)

I'm surprised but pleased at the interest this aroused. That's the joy of democracy.

I thought this one was better http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=2031377
But that's also the result of democracy.

Hm, quiet and under-stated in my eyes is boring. So I wouldn't mind if she had a "Hey, hello"-look (as I would not consider this tacky). When I said "more extravagant" I didn't mean they should paint dollar-signs on the hull or boast a golden anchor. I was thinking of a more yacht-like look.
Ah, sometimes it's not easy to explain what you mean in a foreign language.
By the way, I found ten different translations in German for "tacky" (but I know which one you mean) ;-)

Jens, you are totally missing the point. She is quiet and under-stated in her design. If you are rich enough to be able to live aboard The World you do not want the ship to exude a "Hey!! Hello!! We've arrived!" look. That would be tacky and I don't think that those people who own apartments aboard The World are at all tacky - it is all about less being more.

What always bothered me about The World is that her looks don't match her uniqueness. As far as I know she still is the only private residential cruise ship worldwide. I would have expected that her exterior would more live up to that fact, more stylish, more extravagant... not so ordinary...:-)

I agree Jens about Pacific Dawn and pacific Jewel, but the same can't be said for mv The World!!

Pacific Jewel and her sister were (and are) always among my favorite cruise liners in terms of exterior design. Thanks for this nice photo, Clyde!

They would have been more white if not backlit with the camera pointing North.

I took this shot to compare two dramatically different cruising markets. See the Wikipedia link in the Description for The World. Pacific Jewel with other P&O ships is based in Sydney year round doing Pacific Island cruises.

Thank you Jadran for your Spring my Autumn Comments
