I'd estimate 20-30 of the 5 hatch general cargo ships to carry a comparable amount of cargo. This ship probably has a max crew of 20 men compared to 40-60 of a single general cargo vessel. Of course the older ships were usually owned, built in, flagged in and crewed by men from the owners respective country - in stark contrast to today. Of course back then the shipping industry operated at a slower pace with a much more civilised and less complicated life for those employed within it.
Progress? Debatable I would say.
