S/s GNIEZNO ; According to the shipowner's data, the ship is classified as a coal carrier. The owner of Polska ?egluga Morska (Polish Steamshipping Company - currently POLSTEAM). Unit type B-32 /VI/31 built by the Adolf Warski Shipyard in Szczecin.
The keel was laid down on April 6, 1957 and launched on June 22, 1957. The ship entered service in non-scheduled shipping on November 23 of the same year. In December 1957 the ship was disabled due to boiler failure. Towed to Gibraltar for repairs , returned to service after its completion .
In November 1969, during a very strong storm (over 12 degrees on the Beaufort scale) on the Baltic Sea, he ran into rocks near the port of Borgal; Finland. The Mayday signal was given, a lifeboat alarm was ordered. After successfully completing the rescue operation, the ship was taken to Helsinki for repairs.
However, this is not the end of the unfortunate events related to the history of s/s Gniezno. In July 1975, it collided with a passenger ship of Zegluga Szczecinska m/s LAURA. The ship was sold in 1978. On January 12, 1978, the ship set off on its last voyage - 814 - under the Polish flag. This time also with coal - to Denmark. On January 23, she was handed over to the American shipowner Henry Hall. The name was changed to AZTEC, later to TULUM. the handover of the ship to the new owner took place in Copenhagen. In January 1981, the ship left Houston (Texas) for an unknown destination. The further fate of the ship is unknown.

I think the dates of the two wrecks are confused, as the older photos show several details that match the design of TULUM, IMO 5132676 as seen on the site in a photo of her as GNIEZNO. However, the 1981 date is more likely, as TULUM was last officially reported departing Houston, TX in January, 1981.
I haven't had any luck with vessels named ALEXANDER last reported in that time frame, so perhaps it was never registered under that name.
Kind Regards, Kyle
