The Alexander Spirit moored at the mostly disused berth, Devonport 3 East during an dispute between the crew and Caltex.
The ship’s crew and hundreds of members of the community rallied in various locations in Devonport over the sacking of the Australian crew once the ship were reached its next destination, Singapore. There the crew would be replaced with a foreign workers.

Almost a fortnight after her arrival and after the ship met minimum manning requirements, the tanker cleared berth and made her way to Singapore.
The banner on the side of the ship says “Aussie crew sacked. Replaced with foreign crew.”
