Description:
The OSTFRIESLAND on this picture is in no way he same ship as represented in earlier photos on Shipspotting. She now counts as the first German-flagged LNG-powered ferry. She was rebuilt in 2014, and this was done by replacing the aft section of the hull with a newly designed stern which houses the LNG (liquefied natural gas) bunker tanks, dual-fuel Wärtsilä engines, generators, and Schottel steerable propeller units. The space required for this equipment resulted in an increased length over all, which translates into an added deck space for about fifteen private cars.
The "marriage" of the existing hull and the new stern was in September 2014 and the Ostfriesland re-entered service on 15 June 2015 on the Emden (mainland) to the isle of Borkum run.
The unusual construction seen on the sun deck houses a kind of safety valve. In case of an emergency excess methane will be blown off into the air.
Photo taken 13 August 2015 at Borkum (German Wadden Sea).
