@ csaba: 1. She was a heavy lift cargo ship. Pls see the big Stuelcken gear for heavy deck cargo. Big and long hatches. Better view from the bridge on the fore deck. 2. She had a crew of 43 plus 12 pax. Engineers, engine crew, pax and stewards had their accomodation in the aft accomodation block. Two main engines aft. 3. Nautical officers, captain had their accomodation in the fore part under the bridge. 4. Normal way from fore to aft was the way over the the main deck. Bad weather or not. 5. Unwritten rules of order of ranks. In my view. Regards Peter

Why do some older ships have two separated superstructure? How do you get from one to another in a storm? Is there a under the deck passage?

Some additional details and corrections: Shipyard H. C. Stülcken Sohn (known as Stülckenwerft) is the correct Builder (not Steinwerder Industrie), founded in 1833 closed in 1966, partly continued by Blohm & Voss. Very recommendable this website by Peter Kiehlmann: http://www.ddghansa-shipsphotos.de/
Check as follows: Go to "Register Frachter" and click, chose "L", go to "LICHTENFELS (3)" and you may see excellent photos of the "LICHTENFELS". Enjoy it!

I very good and beautiful design for a freighter capable for heavy cargoes. This class still had the oldfashioned wooden (oak) hatch covers as you could put very heavy loads on top of it.
