I believe most of the time ro/ro as you suggest. At Goole there were specially designed, strengthened ramps built to take the rolling heavy loads off - see my photo of Aberthaw Fisher using one of them.

How did this vessel work? Just a RoRo via stern?
If I'm understanding correct the ramp could be adjusted depending on the pier's height. Heavy stuff could be rolled partly inside the superstructure? That HLD at a side of the П-frame - I guess it's for handling small-sized heavy stuff between the pier & the ship?
