True, there would be no need of this "dummy" popellers in case of controlable pitch propellers - but then we would not be talking about Azipods, as they have only fixed pitch propellers in general. CPP arrangements are more complicated and heavy, and in pod construction weight/size is of great importance.

Fair enough for this case, but why would such be fitted on what were a CP propellers then?

Azipods use fixed pitch propellers, that's why they need these "zero thrust" units first.

How are those temporal thingies instead of her propellers called? I saw such in a doku (German "Sendung mit der Maus") about building the LAMBELU - those were fitted, then the drydock flooded, engines were given a test run, then drydock emptied & normal blades fitted in instead of those. Why they must fit those first rather than normal blades tilted to zero thrust?
