I've been to the museum, it was very interesting, and Bermeo is such a pleasant town. The guy in charge explained us that it was a project co-funded by basque goverment and Bermeo council to give unemployed people a way to train as carpenters. One thing is that those sailors catch the whales by saling in one or two small boats with one man using the harpoon. They drag the whale into the shore, and there they scrap it and take the oil, which was the main goal of the expedition. Mortality was very high, 1/3 to 1/2 of the crew used to die. But the ones who survived earned enough money to buy lands.

Hi Rick. Interesting. Totally different than today. Sea life in XXI century its something else. When I travel and do some spotting, like to do it in all ship types and naval-maritime museums, or museum ships. Its really interesting and you learn a lot from other times sea life.
Here its a link to the Aita Guria web:
http://www.aitaguria.bermeo.org/ca_index.aspx
Its in Spanish.
Thanks for your comments my friend.

Hi Ventuari, what an interesting vessel. I cannot help but think how difficult it would have been to live, work and catch whales in the Atlantic, on a ship this small.
The difficulties of dealing with a whale carcass, once caught, are impossible to imagine.
I guess we did have it 'easy' at sea, after all!
Saludos, Rick
