Description:

12,442 grt; 2,772 dwt; 19, 574 cu ft reefer; 568 passengers.
Owner: Freier Deutsche Gewerkschafts-Bund. Manager: Deutsche Seereederei, Rostock, German Democratic Republic.
Built: 1948 by A/B Götaverken, Gothenburg, Sweden. Yard no. 611.
Propulsion: twin-screw with 2 x eight-cylinder Götaverken 760/1300VG-8U two-stroke diesels of 12,000 bhp (total) at 125 rpm. Speed: 19 knots.
When pictured here in Rotterdam in April 1969, the East German cruise ship VÖLKERFREUNDSCHAFT (the name means "Friendship between peoples") was into her second career. Originally, from 1948 until 1960, she had been the Swedish America Line’s STOCKHOLM. As such, she made a name for herself by sinking the Italian liner ANDREA DOREA, in a collision off the US East Coast.
There was a period of uncertainty for the ship in the mid-1980s, during which period, named FRIDTJOF NANSEN, she spent most of her time in lay-up or as floating accommodation.
Then in 1992 the ship was substantially rebuilt and re-engined to return to cruising ITALIA PRIMA, and, after a spell as VALTUR PRIMA and then CARIBE, became ATHENA for Classic International Cruise. In 2013 she bcame AZORES and, in 2016, ASTORIA. Although virtually unrecognisable as the ship in this picture, she is still soldiering on after 71 years in service.

The ships bell - Stockholm 1948 is in a glass case on board.

Went on her first cruise as Astoria over Easter from Avonmouth. Love the open deck right round the ship. Ideal for photography. Unfortunately hit the tail end of hurricane Kate - but she rode it well, better than the flat bottomed jobbies.
