Description:

Designed during the times when bunker fuel, was really residual fuel oil, and was hardly marketable, Seatrain ordered 4 Gas Turbine powered ships at the Rheinstahl Werft in Emden. This is one of the couple destined for Seatrain's pacific service. In 1980 she was re-enigned with twin diesels, reducing service speed from 26 to 20 knots. After all the Seatrain problems she was eventually taken over by the CY Tung group.
Here shown in 1980, passing the Verolme Rozenburg yard.

Interesting shot. Peter Doehle took these over following the failure of Seatrain Lines and oversaw the completion of the re-engining at HDW. OOCL chartered them for several years operating them on a RTW service before buying them. At one point three of them were being used on OOCL's transatlantic service (the former Dart Line operation). CMA (later CMA CGM) and COSCO ultimately bought two each from OOCL - the CMA ships were in fact their first owned ships - having previously only used chartered tonnage.
