Description:

Again, not really a photo that is up to my normal standards in terms of image quality, but in this case, I think it should be posted anyway: After a service life of 32 years, ACL's 1984-built ATLANTIC CONCERT, today ended her active career for god. At around 20h00 in the evening, she closed her stern ramp for the very last time at Hamburg's Unikai Terminal.

Entirely empty and in ballast, ATLANTIC CONCERT then departed Hamburg at dusk for the long non-stop voyage to the breaking beaches of Alang India.

The ship was built in 1984 at Kockums Varv AB in Malmo, Sweden as yard number 594. She was delivered to Rederi Ab Soya / Wallenius and traded for Atlantic Container Lines, a joint venture operation. In 1987 the ship was lengthened from 249m to 292m at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard of Ulsan, South Korea.

ATLANTIC CONCERT is one of five similar, but not identical, 'sister' vessels from Kockums Varv - Malmo, Chantiers du Nord - Dunkerque, and Swan Hunter - Wallsend. These ACL-G3 ConRos are successively replaced by the new CSSC Hudung-built G4 vessels.

The other ships at Hamburg port - i guess the crews have seen the destination 'Alang' in the AIS - gave her an adequate farewell with some blasts from the horn.

The logo was painted out at Liverpool last week. I think I am also correct in saying that she was the last example of Swedish shipbuilding, as Kockums closed after she was completed.

Thank you very much for your comments, gentlemen. As a matter of fact, the replacement for the ATLANTIC CONCERT is scheduled to arrive in Hamburg on Wednesday. The brand new ATLANTIC SEA has just passed Ouessant. Thus, the old and the new ship might actually meet in the Dover Straits tonight.

PS: I forgot to mention - note that the blue 'ACL' logo on the side of the superstructure has already been painted over for the ship's final voyage to Alang.
