Info from Chris Vallery on Facebook, thanks to him.

That’s a Haskell class transport. In the 1983-1984 timeframe I count 15 candidates that were scrapped in Spain. Interestingly, this ship is intact, yet missing the forward gun tub. Of the 15 candidates, only Hyde (APA-173) is confirmed to have had her forward gun tub removed before decommissioning, so that’s my best guess given the known parameters.

I found only four Heskell-class broken up in Spain 1983-1984:

COLLINGSWORTH (Desguaches Mastea)
SARASOTA (Balbao Desguaces)
OLMSTED (Balbao Desguaces)
SANDOVAL (Isaac Varela Devalillo)

If you check the comment of http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=2435713
it is highly possible that the the ship with yellow masts is indeed the DIMITRIS

It could be the Aragon. She was scrapped in 1987 but was decommissioned in 1980 and struck from the Spanish Navy list on January first, 1982.

This is a vessel of the Haskell-class, Attack Transport United States Navy, type VC2-S-AP5. In the picture you can see the davits for the landing craft still present. There were 125 ordered but eight cancelled. Many did see active service after WW2 in Korea and Vietnam. In 1962/63 only fourteen APA Attack Transports were still in service, of those fourteen internet gives no clear answer to the fate of: Magoffin APA 199, Talledega APA 208, Mountrail APA 213, Navarro APA 215, Pickaway APA 222, Renville APA 227 and Sandoval APA 194. But of course in the picture it can be any other vessel of the 125. Interesting: Noble APA 218 became Spanish Aragón TA-11 but she was scrapped in 1987

This is not a standard Victory cargo ship, but modified US Navy Haskell-class attack transport. KINGSBURY APA 177 or SARASOTA APA 204, that is the question. Both were built at the end of 1944. In 1983 they were sold for scrap in Spain, but final destination is unknown. So the name of vessel pictured at Valencia remains unknown. Rgds

It's a Victory type ship which has never traded after world war II, mothballed for the US reserve fleet.

Hello,
I think the ship with yellow masts could be the Greek DIMITRIS (1955 / 5397 gt / IMO5076157).

Yvon
