Description:

I see another of Gerolf/s excellent Elbe shots this time of the former ORAMA.
She was completed in 1964 by Lithgow/s at Port Glasgow for P&O/s Trident Tankers and sported the old P&O livery of stone upperworks and black hull.
I took this in 1971 at Greenock when she came back in for drydocking.
She became IOANNIS ANGELICOUSSIS in 1974 and in August 1979 she suffered an explosion when loading at Cabinda. She was towed out to sea and sank following more explosions, a sorry end.
Her sister was ORISSA.

Nice shot Paul, for some reason I didn't often see any of P&Os tankers about although they had a bigger tanker fleet than many of us imagined. All of P&Os tankers were managed by Trident Tankers who were operating 9 ships in '71 under their own name. In addition they managed 5 owned by P&O, 2 British India ships, 4 of Charter Shipping's and a lone Moss Huchinson tanker named BUSIRIS. Orama was 65,972DWT pwered by a 2 S.A. 10-cyl B & W oil engine built by John Kincaid & Co. Ltd. This produced 21,000 SHP at 110 rpm giving her a tidy speed of 16.5 knots. Tank layout 7 centre & 14 wing, single pumproom with 4 main cargo pumps rated at 4,800 t.w/hr with a separate stripping system. Victor Pyrate tank cleaning system.
She had a second sister called OPAWA, 65,819DWT built by Barclay, Curle & Co. Ltd., Glasgow which was delivered in 1965. Same B&W engine also built by Kincaid.
