Description:

US Navy Improved Los Angeles Class Nuclear Powered Attack Submarine.
She was built in Newport News VA and commissioned in 1990. She was the last US built submarine that was built on a traditional slip and the launched. All others since have been built in assembly halls and then placed in the water. She and her sister ship USS Topeka (SSN 754) were built with sections of HY-100 steel vice HY-80 steel to test the stronger steel for the upcoming Seawolf class SSNs.
She is almost 362 feet long, over 6200 tons full load, and has a top speed of "over 25 knots" per the US Navy, probably in the range of 32-33 knots. Her crew includes 113 officers and sailors and she equipped with 4 21" torpedo tubes that can fire a mix of up to 25 Mk 48 ADVCAP Torpedoes, Harpoon Anti Ship Missiles, Mines, and Tomahawk Cruise Missiles. In addition she has 12 vertical launch silos that can fire Tomahawk Cruise Missiles and probably soon Long Range Anti Ship Missiles.
She has undertaken a number of cruises to the Mediterranean and Northern Atlantic during her service and recently completed a 5 year old comprehensive overhaul at Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth VA.
She is seen here docked at Berth 5, Pier 3 (The Submarine Pier) at Norfolk Naval Base along on the Elizabeth River. Photo taken from the tour boat Victory Rover.
