Originally built as an oil field supply vessel and named the Sally J. It was acquired by FV Northwind Inc. Company of Seattle in 2007, renamed MV Bluefin, and converted in a research support vessel. The Bluefin has been contracted by NOAA since 2011 to perform yearly maintenance on the Deep-ocean Assessment and Reporting of Tsunamis (DART) system of tsunami detection and early warning buoys located throughout the Pacific Ocean. The 4 to 5-month voyage begins in and ends in Seattle with stops in Alaska, Russia, Japan, Guam, Am Samoa, Tonga, Tahiti, S America, Galapagos, central America, and San Diego.
