Description:

The funnel of Peninsular & Oriental S.N. Co's “Zira” (IMO 7204411) showing the funnel while on charter to the Crusader Shipping Co., U.K., for their Japan/New Zealand service. Commonly known as Crusader Line, the company was formed in 1957 as a joint venture between Shaw Savill Line (Shaw Savill & Albion Co. Ltd.), Port Line Ltd., Blue Star Line Ltd, & New Zealand Shipping Co., Ltd. (the latter's share being taken over by P&O. after the full mergers of the P&O Group companies' operations in 1972). The company initially owned two ships (“Crusader” & “Saracen”) but later ships were chartered in from member group companies (and occasionally others). Port Line withdrew from the venture in 1972, their share being distributed among the remaining three companies. I have no information on when the company ceased to exist, but it may have been in 1975 when the “Zira” and her sister “Zaida” came off charter in September & July of that year respectively. The “Crusader” name was perpetuated by Crusader Swire Container Services Ltd., created in October 1976, but the crusader shield was not used in their markings.
