The designation describes the armament, as stated in the description:

BN (B)allistic Missiles, (N)uclear powered vessel
GN (G)uided Missiles, (N)uclear powered vessel

The Ohio-Class submarines were converted (instead of beeing decommissioned) because the START II treaty limits the number of strategic submarines (armed with ballistic missiles) to 14 from 2002 on.

They are now armed with (tactical) Tomahawk missiles instead of (strategic) Trident missiles and capable of delivering SEALs.

Best regards,

Michael.
