Thank you all for your comments. I hope we will soo live again in a world where 0.2% fuel savings will sound like a real problem...
(I realize how blessed I am not to be forced to stay at home, to go to work, and to have a semblance of a "normal life" - and that in a country that used to be in the news at first as a dangerous outbreak zone.)

Cheers

Wow, what a high level technical conversation over bow & stern designs....
Brings a bit of light and joy into my corona virus home isolation!
Thanks to everybody

Just like Tuomas said, these days it's all about blunt noses, and fancy stern contraptions for flow optimization (schneekluth and other ducts and "wings")...

Cheers

Pica, your assumption is largely correct - at typical bulker/tanker speeds, the resistance is largely from friction. I don't think there's much to gain from bow geometry anymore after all those CFD calculations; the achievable savings, if any, can be obtained from the stern.

Hello Lappino,

for sometime I notice that some bulker and tanker newbuildings don't have a bulbous bow anymore. Are they that slow that it doesnt have any fuel saving/speed increasing effect?
Thanks in advance for any tecnical explanation
BR Jürgen
