Description:
Losinjska Plovidba of Rijeka, Yugoslavia's BELI is seen arriving at Valletta, Malta, in September 1978
Built at Landskrona in 1938 by Oresundsvarvet A/B as WIRIL for Stockholms Rederi A/B Svea, she was sold to Kvarnerska Plovidba of Rijeka in 1961, being renamed PLATAK.
Operated by Losinjska Plovidba from 1967 as BELI, she finally arrived at Sveti Kajo, near Split, on 26th December 1980 to be broken up.
Marijan Zuvic advises as follows:
"In 1942 WIRIL was chartered by the Third Reich's Fishing Administration (Fischereinkaufsgemeinschaft) to carry fish from occupied Norway to the Swedish port of Lulea.
In late 1943 WIRIL was chartered by the International Committee of the Red Cross to carry emergency supplies to the starving population of German occupied Greek islands.
Although she was clearly marked with red crosses, on February 7, 1944 WIRIL was attacked by Allied aircraft at Chios. The ship was heavily damaged and some crew members and a Red Cross delegate were killed.
In August 1945 WIRIL was temporarily repaired and sailed for Göteborg where she arrived on September 18, 1945."
