WELCOME TO SHIPSPOTTING.COM
Description:
French self propelled barge JEAN, seen at Kaala-Gomen, New Caledonia, during 1994.
Nothing about her life except a previous name on the bow 'SEA TOW 3'. She looked like a converted towing barge fitted later with two outboard motors and two azimutal propellers.
She was used to carry nickel ore from mine terminals for the bulkers, anchored nearby.
Thank you very much all for your interesting contributions.
Yvon

The one(s) I saw were big dumb barges. Seems they could lift up to 8000 tonnes.
Photo here of one of the bigger ones

A good surprise to find this barge had a long story.
Was this barge self propelled or towed when seen at Williamstown ?
Cheers,

I recall seeing them a few times in Williamstown, Port Philip, with prefabricated warship parts for the Tenix shipyard - maybe 20/30 years ago.

Thank you very much. That could match very well as New Caledonia is situated in the area.
