Description:

Gulf Shipping Corporation of Karachi's 1961 Bremerhaven built BAQIR is seen passing Portishead, outbound from Avonmouth exactly fifty years ago today, on 7th August 1971.

EX-DIMITRIS-70

Later: 1972 HOOGHLY (Indian Navy support ship) - 74 LOK ADHAR - 79 VARUNA ADHAR

BAQIR was captured by the Indian Navy during the Indo-Pakistan war of December 1971. On 17th Apr 1972 she was renamed HOOGHLY and manned by the Shipping Corporation of India for transporting troops and stores from Bangladesh to India. Then, until 1974, she was used for the transportation of stores and material to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and between naval ports, apparently under the name of ADHAR.

In January 1974 she was chartered to the Mogul Line of Bombay for four years and renamed LOK ADHAR, as which she was employed on coastal services. On completion of the charter in 1979 she was sold to Thakur Shipping of Bombay to trade as VARUNA ADHAR until broken up at Visakhapatnam in 1989.
