Good morning Pieter, thanks.
This is a truly fascinating photo, which clearly shows what a daunting repair prospect she was.

Note the remains of the starboard anchor chain, hung off from the main deck, and utilised (I suspect) as the emergency pick up tow line, should the main towage bridle fail. There is no sign of the actual towage bridle in this image.

Note also the neat, squared 'V' cut near the bulbous bow sign, which I think was cut by the salvors, to provide a convenient and strong location to secure the towing bridle/lines at main deck level, the fo'c's'le head, where towage lines would usually be secured, looking precariously weakened due to the damage sustained.

However, this is only my supposition.

Thanks Rick, I knew that nothing happening on the Canaries would have escaped your attention. I have amended the data accordingly. Apparently these were sturdy ships, Akitsu (Kurushima) built four of them for Clipper, and three of them are still trading, while the fourth one originally Clipper Tiger was only scrapped three years ago.

Good morning Denis, and thanks. I agree with you, a surprising, and very costly, repair job.

'Clipper Pioneer' - IMO 8517580.

On 18/04/1992, during a voyage between Rotterdam, Netherlands, and Warri, Nigeria, in a position 21'46N, 17'37W (NW of Nouadhibou), the 'Clipper Pioneer' collided with the fully loaded (270,000 tons of crude oil) VLCC 'World Hitachi Zosen' - IMO 7376446.

Damage to the VLCC consisted of an 'L' shaped hole measuring 30m. by 5m., above the waterline, in No.1 Starboard tank. Fire and explosion ensued, and some 950 tons of crude was lost. One crewman was reported missing.

The anchor chain, windlass, and lifeboat from 'Clipper Pioneer' were found in the damaged area of the VLCC.

The fire on the VLCC was extinguished on 19/04/1992, and she was subsequently escorted by tug to a position SW of the Cape Verde Islands, where the cargo was transhipped to the 'Eastern Trust' - IMO 7376666, and subsequently sold to Pakistan for demolition, arriving at Gadani Beach on 13/08/1992.

The 'Clipper Pioneer' also suffered some external fire damage, and serious structural damage, & was subsequently contracted to be repaired at Lisbon.

While under tow towards there, on 20/04/1992, the tug and tow arrived at Las Palmas de Gran Canaria for unspecified repairs.
(My guess would be for two reasons:
1) Class assessment of the casualty's structural condition, re: stabilty and safety, for onward towage to Lisbon. i.e. insurance, and
2) Class, owners, & shipyard (Lisnave, surely) inspections for repairs.)

Tug and tow eventually arrived at Lisbon on 23/07/1992 where repairs were completed.

Clipper Pioneer details:
Keel laid on 13/11/1985, launched on 18/01/1986, and completed on 25/03/1986, by Taihei Kogyo, Akitsu, Japan (1832)
7,170 g.t. and 12,342 dwt., as:
'Clipper Pioneer' to 1992,
'Rugia' to 2004,
'Orchid Sea' to 2013, and
'Golden Bird' since.

Now Egyptian owned, and remains in service to date, 17/08/2021.
